Back in 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson made a mistake that would turn out to be one of the most refreshing inventions of all time. On a chilly night in San Francisco, Frank left a cup of homemade soda (made from powdered soda mix and water) outside on his porch—with a stirring stick still in it.
By the next morning, Frank woke up to find that his soda had frozen solid around the stick! But instead of tossing it out, the curious kid decided to taste his frosty creation—and that’s when the idea for the popsicle was born!
From Frozen Fun to Family Favorite
Frank didn’t immediately capitalize on his accidental treat. In fact, it wasn’t until 1923, when he was an adult, that he realized he was sitting on a potential goldmine. He patented the frozen treat under the name "Epsicle"—a combination of his last name and "icicle." However, Frank’s children loved the treat so much that they started calling it “Pop’s ‘sicle”, and eventually, the name Popsicle stuck!
A Summer Sensation
Once the popsicle hit the market, it became an instant hit. Frank’s icy treats came in seven flavors and were sold for just five cents. It wasn’t long before popsicles became a staple of summer fun, with kids racing to grab a sweet, refreshing treat on hot days.
In 1925, Epperson sold the rights to his popsicle to the Joe Lowe Company, which turned the brand into a household name. Soon after, they introduced the twin popsicle—two connected popsicles that could be split and shared, perfect for kids looking to save a penny and share with a friend.
The Frozen Empire Grows
Today, Popsicle has grown into a massive brand with endless flavors, colors, and varieties, but its accidental origin remains one of the sweetest stories in frozen treat history.
