Albert Einstein might be known for his wild hair and E=mc², but there was so much more to this brilliant physicist! Here are some fun and quirky facts about Einstein that will make you see him as more than just a scientific genius

He Failed His First College Entrance Exam

It’s true! Albert Einstein didn’t ace everything. In fact, when he first applied to the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich, he failed the entrance exam—specifically in subjects like languages and history. Fortunately, he didn’t give up, studied more, and passed on his second try. Even geniuses have their setbacks!

A Late Talker Who Made Up His Own Words

Einstein didn’t start speaking until he was around four years old, which worried his parents. They thought something might be wrong with him, but little did they know he was just taking his time to cook up big thoughts! When he did start talking, he often muttered sentences softly to himself before saying them aloud—his family even called this "Einstein’s syndrome."

He Had a Love-Hate Relationship with Socks

Einstein didn’t like socks at all and often refused to wear them. He found them annoying because they would get holes in them too easily. He figured that since his feet were in shoes, why bother with socks? Who knew the genius of relativity was also a rebel against fashion norms?

He Was Offered the Presidency of Israel

In 1952, Einstein was offered the presidency of Israel, but he politely declined. Although he was deeply committed to Jewish culture and values, he didn’t see himself as qualified for a political position.

He Loved Sailing, Even Though He Wasn’t Great at It

Einstein loved to sail, but there’s a twist: he was reportedly not very good at it! He would often drift or get stuck without wind, but that didn’t bother him—he just enjoyed the peace and quiet. Sailing gave him time to think about life, physics, and perhaps how to get back to shore!

His Brain Was Preserved for Study

After his death in 1955, Einstein’s brain was removed (without his family’s permission at first) and preserved by pathologist Thomas Stoltz Harvey. Scientists studied it for decades in an attempt to discover what made him so brilliant. It turns out his brain had unusual features, like a higher number of glial cells in some regions—though it's still hard to say if this was the key to his genius.

He Had a Soft Spot for Music

Einstein was a talented violinist and found great comfort in music. He once said, "If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician." He loved playing works by Mozart and Bach and often played his violin to relax or when he was stuck on a complex scientific problem.

He Helped Invent a Refrigerator

Einstein, along with his former student Leo Szilard, co-invented an eco-friendly refrigerator in the 1920s. This fridge had no moving parts and ran on heat instead of electricity. It didn’t catch on commercially, but it shows how Einstein’s genius wasn’t limited to theoretical physics—he was also trying to make life more practical!

He Had A Great Sense of Humor

Einstein was known for his sense of humor and loved a good joke. In one instance, he was asked for his autograph and cheekily responded, "I will give it to you, but you have to pay ten cents for it!" When the fan asked why, he said, "Because I need to buy some chocolate."

The Famous Tongue Photo

Einstein’s most famous photograph—sticking his tongue out—was taken on his 72nd birthday. He was tired of photographers asking him to smile, so he decided to surprise them instead. The image became an iconic symbol of his playful personality.

He Picked Up Cigarette Butts Off the Street

After he gave up buying tobacco for financial reasons, he would collect discarded cigarette butts, empty the remnants, and reuse the tobacco. This quirky habit shows how Einstein's brilliant mind didn’t prevent him from being quite thrifty—or resourceful in his own way!
