It all began with meatballs.
My childhood neighborhood in Riverview, Michigan, was taken by storm one summer by meatballs, which showed up at all the graduation parties and outside gatherings. The unexpected ingredient in the sauce covering those meatballs had everyone talking through full mouths, empty toothpicks in hand, ready to skewer another ball. Grape jelly added to BBQ sauce? How weird!
How delightful.
Years later, something similarly weird was printed in a “Hints from Heloise” column: Mock Pecan Pie. I baked it up and served it to guests. Their eyes widened when I finally and gleefully relayed the recipe's secret ingredient: pinto beans. I swooned shortly after that, at a wedding shower, when my cousin was presented with a recipe from my grandmother’s elderly friend for Corn Cob Jelly.
I was hooked.
