Born in Alexandria around 69 BC, Cleopatra VII was Egypt’s last pharaoh and one of history’s most remarkable rulers. Brilliant and multilingual, she spoke at least nine languages, including Egyptian, Greek, and Hebrew, making her the first of her dynasty to speak the language of her people.
She was politically fearless, forming strategic alliances and romantic ties with Julius Caesar and later Mark Antony to keep Egypt independent. Cleopatra wasn’t known for conventional beauty, but for intelligence, charm, and presence that could disarm even her rivals.
She portrayed herself as the living goddess Isis, appearing in ceremonial dress to strengthen her divine image. When she died at 39, Egypt became a Roman province, ending a dynasty that had ruled for nearly three centuries.
