How Hippos Stay Sun Safe

Hippos have a unique way of protecting their skin from the harsh sun. They secrete an oily substance that functions as a natural sunblock, keeping them safe during long hours under intense sunlight. This secretion, often referred to as "blood sweat" for its red and orange hue, is neither blood nor actual sweat.

The red pigment serves to shield hippos from harmful UV rays, while the orange acts as an antibacterial layer, helping to ward off infections. This built-in "sunscreen" not only safeguards hippos from the sun but also plays a role in maintaining their skin health—an efficient solution tailored by nature.
