Oh, Canada!

Canada has More Lakes than the Rest of the World Combined!

When it comes to lakes, Canada isn't just winning—it’s totally crushing it! This vast country boasts more lakes than the rest of the world combined! With over 3 million lakes, it’s as if someone sprinkled water like confetti across the entire Canadian landscape. Want to go for a swim? You’re never far from a lake here!

How Did Canada Get So Many Lakes?

It’s all thanks to glaciers! During the last Ice Age, massive glaciers carved out deep depressions in the land. As they melted, these depressions filled with water, creating an abundance of lakes—big and small. From the sprawling Great Lakes like Lake Superior to tiny unnamed gems hidden deep in the wilderness, Canada’s lakes come in every shape and size imaginable.

A Splash of Fun Stats:

  • Over 60% of the world’s lakes are found in Canada, which means if you see a beautiful lake, there's a good chance it’s Canadian.

  • The province of Ontario alone is home to more than 250,000 lakes—you could explore a new lake every day for the rest of your life and still not see them all!

  • One of Canada’s largest lakes, Great Bear Lake, is so huge it’s roughly the size of Belgium!
