Scientists discovered a human cell that only exists during pregnancy

In April 2026, researchers published a study in Nature identifying a previously unknown type of human cell that appears only during pregnancy and disappears afterward.
What they found
The discovery came from a large-scale effort to map the maternal–fetal interface, the boundary where the placenta connects to the mother’s body.
By analyzing more than a million cells across all stages of pregnancy, researchers identified a new maternal cell type that had never been described before.
These cells:
appear early in pregnancy
sit at the boundary between mother and fetus
help regulate how the placenta connects to the mother’s blood supply
Scientists found that these cells act like a biological “speed regulator,” controlling how deeply fetal cells grow into the uterus, a process that must be precisely balanced for a healthy pregnancy.
This discovery helps explain conditions that have long been difficult to understand, including:
preeclampsia (dangerous high blood pressure)
preterm birth
miscarriage
Researchers can now identify specific cell types involved in these complications, rather than treating pregnancy as a single system.
These newly discovered cells respond to cannabinoids, chemicals found in cannabis, which may help explain why cannabis use during pregnancy has been linked to reduced blood flow and other risks.
This research may eventually make it possible to:
detect pregnancy complications earlier
develop treatments that target specific cell types
better understand how the placenta forms and functions
It also provides a detailed biological map that scientists can use to study both healthy and high-risk pregnancies.
Even in something as fundamental as human pregnancy, scientists are still discovering entirely new cell types.
