Secrets of Slovenia

Lake Bled's Enchanting Island of Legends

Nestled in Slovenia’s breathtaking Lake Bled, a tiny island known as Blejski Otok holds centuries of legends, mystery, and some of Europe’s most picturesque architecture. Dating back to the 9th century, the island's history is layered, with archaeological evidence hinting at a time when ancient Slavs worshiped here, honoring Živa, the goddess of love and fertility. As the centuries passed, early Christian settlers transformed the island into a sacred site.

Today, Lake Bled Island is home to the Church of the Assumption, a stunning mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture. The original church, built in the 12th century, was dedicated to the Virgin Mary but was later damaged by an earthquake. In 1698, the church was rebuilt with its current Baroque elements, and it’s said that ringing the famous wishing bell, installed in 1534, brings luck and grants wishes to visitors.

To reach the church, visitors climb 99 stone steps, and tradition holds that grooms should carry their brides up the stairs for a happy marriage—making it a beloved wedding spot.

Surrounding the island, the Julian Alps and the medieval Bled Castle perched on a nearby cliff add to the fairy-tale ambiance, while traditional pletna boats transport visitors to this enchanted place.
