The $450 Million Mystery Masterpiece

Salvator Mundi

In 2017, Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi shattered records when it sold for an astonishing $450.3 million at Christie's in New York. This makes it the most expensive painting ever sold. The artwork, depicting Christ as the "Savior of the World," shows him raising his right hand in blessing while holding a crystal orb in his left—symbolizing the heavens and Earth.

But the painting's history is as enigmatic as its subject. Rediscovered in 2005, Salvator Mundi was attributed to da Vinci after years of rigorous analysis and restoration. Before that, it had been lost to time, presumed to be a copy, and even sold in 1958 for just £45 (about $60 today).

The sale itself was dramatic. After a bidding war, the painting was purchased by a Saudi Arabian prince acting on behalf of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Rumor has it the artwork will eventually become the crown jewel of a cultural museum in Saudi Arabia. However, since the sale, the painting has vanished from public view, fueling speculation about its authenticity and whereabouts.

Controversy also surrounds the painting’s condition. Some art historians argue that extensive restoration has altered its original state, leaving questions about how much of the masterpiece is truly da Vinci’s hand. Others question whether it was entirely painted by the Renaissance genius or partly by his workshop.

One thing is certain: Salvator Mundi continues to captivate the art world, not only for its breathtaking price but for the mysteries that still swirl around its provenance, restoration, and ultimate fate. Could it reemerge soon? Only time will tell.
