The Animals That Sleep with One Eye Open

Some animals never fully switch off when they sleep. Dolphins sleep with one eye open to stay alert for predators while they rest.
Whales, certain birds, and some fish do the same thing. This special type of rest is called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep. One half of the brain sleeps while the other keeps watch, allowing these animals to breathe, move, and stay safe.
