The Duel That Took to the Skies
Two men. One woman. One duel — in hot air balloons over Paris.

In 1808, Paris witnessed one of history's most unusual duels. Monsieur de Grandpré and Monsieur Le Pique, both French gentlemen, found themselves vying for the affections of Mademoiselle Tirevit, a celebrated dancer at the Paris Opera.
To resolve their romantic rivalry, they agreed upon a duel with a twist: each would ascend in a hot air balloon, armed with a pistol, and attempt to shoot down the other's balloon. As the balloons rose over the Tuileries Gardens, a crowd gathered below, initially believing they were witnessing a balloon race.
At a height of approximately 900 yards, Le Pique fired first and missed. Grandpré then took his shot, successfully puncturing Le Pique's balloon, which crashed into a rooftop, resulting in the deaths of Le Pique and his pilot.
Grandpré descended safely, having won the duel and, presumably, the favor of Mademoiselle Tirevit.
