Why the Romans Thought Butter Was Barbaric

The ancient Romans thought butter was for barbarians. They preferred olive oil for cooking, bathing, and lighting their lamps. Butter came from the colder regions of northern Europe, and Roman writers like Pliny the Elder described it more as an ointment than a food. To Roman high society, butter smelled odd, melted too fast in the heat, and belonged to “uncivilized” tribes.
