A Roman Coin Hoard Hidden in Plain Sight

Photograph of ancient roman coins

In May 2023, recreational diver Davide Azara noticed a faint glint on the seabed just a few feet below the surface off the coast of Sardinia, near the town of Arzachena. What appeared to be scattered debris turned out to be an extraordinary archaeological discovery: tens of thousands of ancient Roman coins, dating to around A.D. 324–340.

The coins were found tightly clustered and remarkably well preserved, suggesting they had been stored together, possibly as part of a ship’s cargo. Archaeologists quickly secured the area, and the hoard is now being studied as a rare snapshot of everyday money in the late Roman Empire.

Despite immediately reporting the find and fully cooperating with authorities, Azara received no financial reward.

Under Italian law, compensation is allowed only for archaeological discoveries considered fortuitous, meaning purely accidental. While Azara first noticed the coins with his eyes, officials noted that he had a metal detector on his boat and later returned to the site with it. That detail was enough to legally classify the discovery as intentional exploration rather than a chance stumble. The Ministry of Culture and Italy’s administrative court upheld the ruling.

Studied as a single discovery, the coins offer rare insight into how money moved through the Roman world. Finds like this are uncommon not because the coins are rare, but because their original context is almost never preserved. In this case, the sea preserved what time usually scatters.
