Why Most Orange Cats Are Boys

Photo of an orange tabby cat

About 80% of orange tabby cats are male, and the reason comes down to genetics. The orange color gene is carried on the X chromosome. Male cats have only one X chromosome, so if it carries the orange gene, they’ll be orange.

Female cats need the gene on both X chromosomes, which is much less common. If they have it on just one, they often become tortoiseshell or calico instead.
