Flex Appeal at 35,000 Feet

The wings of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner are so flexible they can bend upwards by 25 feet during flight — that’s taller than a two-story house. Built from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, these sleek wings don’t just look graceful midair — their flexibility helps absorb turbulence, reduce drag, and boost fuel efficiency.
But the 787 might soon be outstretched.
Boeing’s next-generation jet, the 777-9, is expected to be even more flexible. With longer carbon-fiber wings and innovative folding wingtips, it’s designed to handle greater loads while maintaining a smoother, quieter ride.
