Johnny Appleseed: The Man Who Planted His Way to Land Ownership

Johnny Appleseed wasn’t just planting apple trees—he was planting property lines.
His real name was John Chapman, and in the early 1800s, U.S. land laws allowed settlers to claim land by planting orchards. Chapman took full advantage of this, establishing apple nurseries across the frontier—fencing them in, caring for them, and legally securing over 1,200 acres in the process.
And those apples? They weren’t for eating. Most were too sour for snacking, but perfect for making hard cider, the frontier drink of choice.
Forget the folklore—Johnny Appleseed was a barefoot strategist with a long game.
