Monaco's High Stakes History

How a Tiny Fortress Became a Playground for the Rich

Tiny Monaco is known for luxury, racing, and royalty—but its past is surprisingly bold.

In 1297, Francesco Grimaldi seized a seaside fortress by disguising himself as a monk, launching a royal dynasty that still reigns today.

Facing bankruptcy in the 1800s, the Grimaldis opened the now-iconic Monte Carlo Casino. Paired with a no income tax policy, it turned Monaco into a playground for the wealthy. The glamour soared in 1956 when Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III, bringing Hollywood prestige to the palace.

Though smaller than Central Park, Monaco blends centuries of royal intrigue with modern sustainability—and continues to punch far above its weight.
