Australia is on the Move...Literally

The Continent That Can't Sit Still

Australia isn’t just sitting still—it’s drifting north at about 7 centimeters (2.75 inches) a year, thanks to the motion of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate. That might sound small, but over time it adds up.

The country moves so fast, its GPS coordinates had to be updated by 1.5 meters in 2016 to stay accurate. Otherwise, your map might think you’re in the ocean when you’re standing on land.

This steady motion also contributes to earthquakes near neighboring plates and, in the very long run, could lead to Australia crashing into Asia.

Geologists believe we’re slowly drifting toward the formation of a new supercontinent—with Australia at its heart.
