The Most Televised Face in History

Photo of Queen Elizabeth II as a child on Time Magazine cover

For more than seventy years, one face appeared on television screens around the world more consistently than any other: Elizabeth II.

Her coronation in 1953 was one of the first major global television events. Millions watched. Many bought their first television set for it.

After that came decades of:

• Annual Christmas broadcasts
• State visits and diplomatic ceremonies
• Jubilees
• Royal weddings and funerals
• National addresses during moments of crisis

From the early days of black-and-white broadcasting through the era of satellite TV and global streaming, her reign overlapped nearly the entire modern television age.

There is no official broadcast hour counter. But because of the length of her reign, the global reach of the Commonwealth, and constant rebroadcasts of archival footage, she is widely regarded as the most televised person in history.

One reign. Seven decades. One face that grew up alongside television itself.
