Dam Good Timing
Wetland Restoration? Already Handled.

In the Brdy Protected Landscape of the Czech Republic, locals had been waiting since 2018 for the government to build a series of dams to restore wetlands and prevent drought. The plan was in place—but stalled for years by bureaucracy and disputes over land ownership.
The estimated cost? Roughly 30 million Czech koruna—about $1.2 million USD.
Then, in early 2025, a family of Eurasian beavers moved in.
Without permits, budgets, or delays, the beavers instinctively built dams—right where the humans had planned them. Their construction not only achieved the same environmental goals but also saved the government the entire cost of the project.
As a local conservationist put it: “Nature took its course.”
