King Ludwig II

King Ludwig II had a fascination with building...

King Ludwig II of Bavaria wasn’t your average ruler. Forget wars and politics—he was all about building the ultimate dream castles. First up was Neuschwanstein, perched in the Bavarian mountains, looking like it jumped out of a fairy tale. One castle, though, was not enough for Ludwig. Next came Linderhof, a mini-Versailles, designed just for himself, and then Herrenchiemsee, yet another homage to French opulence, complete with endless mirrors and chandeliers.

Ludwig’s idea of a good time was creating these palaces, but he rarely stayed in them. Instead, he used them as an escape from the world, indulging his fantasies far from the drudgery of ruling. His ministers struggled to keep up with his spending, but Ludwig didn’t care—he even added a fake cave with its own lake.

In the end, Ludwig left behind some of the most iconic castles in the world, a testament to his wild imagination. Today, millions visit Bavaria to see these fantastical creations. King Ludwig may have been a little eccentric, but he gave us palaces straight out of a dream—luxurious, over-the-top, and unforgettable.
