Ravens May Be Showing Off on Purpose

Ravens are known for their intelligence, but one behavior surprised even scientists: they appear to use objects to communicate. In the wild, ravens have been observed picking up items like moss, twigs, or small stones—not to eat or build with, but to hold up and display to another raven nearby.
The gestures usually came before social activities like grooming or playing, suggesting the birds were trying to get attention or show off—similar to how a human might say, “Hey, look at this!” This kind of behavior, known as declarative communication, was once thought to be limited to humans and great apes.
