The Strangest Mating Rituals

In the Animal Kingdom

From sky-high dances to snake pileups, the animal kingdom doesn’t hold back when it comes to mating rituals. Here are a few standouts:

Bowerbirds
Males build and decorate intricate bowers with colorful items—even trash—to impress picky females.

Anglerfish
Tiny males fuse to giant females, becoming permanent, parasitic mates who fertilize her eggs on demand.

Giraffes
Males fight with their necks—literally—swinging them in fierce battles to win mating rights.

Honeybees
Drones mate mid-air with the queen, then die shortly after. It's a one-time gig with a dramatic exit.

Red-sided Garter Snakes
Thousands gather in giant mating balls each spring, with dozens of males swarming a single female.

Bonobos
These primates use sex for everything from greeting to conflict resolution—making it a key part of social life.

Blue-footed Boobies
Males show off their bright blue feet in a dance-off. The bluer the feet, the better their chances.

Birds of Paradise
With wild plumage and even wilder moves, these birds perform complex dances to win over a mate.
