Popsicles

The Frozen Treat Created by Accident

In 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson accidentally left a cup of soda with a stirring stick on his porch overnight. By morning, it had frozen—and when he tasted it, the popsicle was born.

Years later, Frank patented the treat as the “Epsicle,” but his kids called it “Pop’s ‘sicle,” and the name Popsicle stuck. By 1923, he was selling them in seven flavors for just five cents.

The treat quickly became a summer staple, and by 1925, Frank sold the rights to the Joe Lowe Company, which helped make popsicles a national sensation—especially the shareable twin pop. What started as a frozen accident became one of the coolest treats in history.
