When Baths Came with Voltage

The Craze for Electric Bathing

In the late 19th century, Victorians found a shocking new health trend—literally. Electric bathing was all the rage, with people stepping into metal tubs or donning wired belts to give their bodies a mild jolt.

Why? They believed electricity could cure everything from depression to joint pain and even boost beauty.

Spas and salons promised glowing skin, growing hair, and renewed vitality—all from a gentle buzz of low-voltage current. Some even installed electric bathing cabinets that looked like futuristic wardrobes, offering full-body zaps in the name of wellness.

It was the spa day of the future—minus the bubbles, plus a little lightning.
