Tangier Island, Virginia

Where Time and Strange Accents Stand Still

Tangier Island, nestled in the Chesapeake Bay off Virginia, has roots dating back to the 1600s. Once home to the Pocomoke people, it was charted by Captain John Smith in 1608 and named after Morocco’s port city of Tangier.

Settled by English families in the 1770s, the island developed a distinct dialect—an Americanized form of Elizabethan English that still echoes today. Fishing, crabbing, and oystering have sustained the community for generations.

Tangier’s isolation has preserved its culture, but rising seas now threaten its future. It remains a rare blend of early American life and a community on the edge of change.
