The Myth of Photographic Memory
Why Perfect Recall Isn't What You Think

Think you have a photographic memory? Science says... probably not.
Despite the popular idea of people who can mentally "snap" a page of text or an entire room and recall it in perfect detail, true photographic memory has never been scientifically proven to exist in adults.
Some children show signs of eidetic memory—the ability to vividly recall an image for a few seconds after seeing it—but it fades with age. Even then, it’s not perfect recall—it’s more like a brief mental imprint.
Those who seem to have photographic memories often rely on extraordinary pattern recognition, practiced memory techniques, or, in rare cases like hyperthymesia, the ability to recall nearly every personal experience.
In reality, your brain doesn’t work like a camera—it edits, prioritizes, and fills in gaps. That’s what makes memory so fascinating... and so unreliable.
