The Stache Cash

A Hair-Raising Perk for Police Officers

In parts of India, some police officers receive an unusual perk: a monthly allowance for maintaining a mustache. This unique policy reflects cultural beliefs that associate mustaches with authority and masculinity, making them a point of pride for officers.

In Uttar Pradesh (UP):
The Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) in UP revived the mustache allowance in 2019, offering up to ₹250 each month to officers with impressive mustaches. The initiative is intended to promote the tradition of mustache-wearing among officers, reinforcing their commanding presence in the community.

In Madhya Pradesh (MP):
Historically, some districts in MP offered a smaller allowance of ₹33, but this was not a statewide practice. Instead, it was left to the discretion of local police chiefs to decide if officers in their districts would receive the benefit.

These allowances are not standardized across India and may vary depending on departmental policies and leadership. While mustaches remain a cultural symbol in many regions, financial incentives to maintain them are a unique, regionally dependent practice in Indian police departments.
