"Bee in Your Bonnet" When Ideas Won't Stop Buzzing

When Ideas Won't Stop Buzzing

The phrase “bee in your bonnet” is a delightfully quirky expression that means you’re obsessed or preoccupied with an idea, and it’s buzzing around in your head non-stop—just like a pesky bee that won’t leave you alone!

The Buzzy Beginning

The phrase dates back to the 16th century, when people wore bonnets (fancy head coverings, not the hoods of cars!). Imagine for a second—you're wearing your bonnet, and suddenly, a bee gets inside. Now, you can’t think of anything else except getting that little creature out of there! Naturally, it would drive you to distraction, and that’s where the metaphor comes in: having a “bee in your bonnet” became a way to describe someone who’s so fixated on something, it’s all they can think about.

What’s Buzzing?

Over the years, the phrase has evolved to refer to someone who has a particular pet peeve, passion, or even an obsession. If someone’s got a “bee in their bonnet” about a topic, they won’t stop talking about it, thinking about it, or doing something about it.
