Ravens Can Talk and They Love a Good Prank

Photograph of a Raven flying

Ravens are among the smartest animals on Earth. They can solve puzzles, plan for the future, and even recognize themselves in a mirror. Their brains are structured much like a primate’s, giving them exceptional problem-solving and memory skills.

Unlike most birds that mimic sounds to attract mates or mark territory, ravens seem to mimic for amusement and communication. They can imitate human voices, animal calls, and everyday noises such as doors creaking, camera shutters, or even sirens. Some speak more than a hundred words, often at moments that feel almost too fitting to be a coincidence.

Ravens are also known pranksters. They have been seen pretending to hide food while other ravens watch, only to stash it elsewhere later. They tug tails, unzip bags, and drop pebbles just to get a reaction. It’s all part of what researchers call “playful deception, ”a sign of both intelligence and personality.
