Royal Perfume: How a Queen Keeps Her Kingdom in Line

Photograph of Royal Crown

The queen bee rules her colony through a mix of scent, touch, and proof of her vitality. Her body releases a blend of pheromones that spreads through the hive as workers groom and feed her, carrying a quiet message from bee to bee. A strong, steady fragrance tells them she is healthy and laying eggs, which keeps the colony focused on tending the nursery, building honeycomb, and foraging.

When she matures, the queen takes a few daring mating flights, releasing a perfume that drones detect from far away with their sensitive antennae. They race toward her in midair, and those that mate die soon after. Once she returns to the hive, her scent shifts, signaling that she is fertile and ready to lead.

Her ongoing egg-laying and presence reinforce that signal, guiding thousands of workers and prompting them to raise a successor only when her strength begins to fade.
