The Caterpillar That Hires Bodyguards

Some caterpillars don’t just munch leaves—they strike deals with ants.
The Lysimachia caterpillar (a type of blue butterfly in the Lycaenidae family) produces a sweet secretion that attracts ants. In return, the ants act as bodyguards, fiercely defending the caterpillar from predators and parasites.
But here’s where it gets wilder:
In some species, the relationship is so close that the caterpillar is carried into the ants’ nest, where it lives among them, fed and protected like one of their own. It even mimics ant sounds and scents to blend in—a master of disguise and diplomacy.
This type of mutual relationship is called myrmecophily—literally “ant love”—and it’s one of nature’s most fascinating alliances.
