Music Can Change the Flavor Of Cheese

Hip Hop or Classsical?

Ever heard of rockin’ out to make some rockin' cheese? Turns out, cheese really knows how to feel the vibe! In a cheesy experiment straight out of Switzerland, scientists discovered that playing different genres of music can actually change the flavor of cheese.

The Cheesey Experiment

Swiss cheesemaker Beat Wampfler (fitting name, right?) decided to test if music could influence the aging process of Emmental cheese. He teamed up with researchers from Bern University of the Arts, and they exposed cheese wheels to a variety of music for six months. The genres ranged from classical Mozart to hip-hop beats by A Tribe Called Quest, with some techno and rock thrown in for good measure.

Hip-Hop Cheese for the Win!

So, what was the verdict? The cheese that aged to hip-hop had the most intense and complex flavor—more funk, more depth, and more deliciousness! The vibrations from the bass and beats seemed to infuse the cheese with a fuller taste, while classical music created a subtler, smoother flavor.

It seems cheese likes to boogie—and it turns out, bass-heavy beats help it ripen differently compared to more mellow tunes. Who knew that A Tribe Called Quest would produce cheese with a kick?

Mozart or Metal? Your Choice!

If you’re feeling fancy, you might play Mozart to make your cheese elegant and mild. If you’re in the mood for something with attitude, why not blast some heavy metal and see if your cheddar gets extra sharp? It’s all about the vibe—cheese, like people, has its own groove!
