The Man Behind the Machine

Frank Zamboni

Most people know the name. Fewer know the man.

Frank Zamboni 's  family originally ran an ice delivery business, supplying blocks to keep food cold in the pre-refrigerator days. But as electric fridges took over, that business began to melt away.

So they pivoted. In 1940, the Zambonis opened an outdoor skating rink in warm, sunny Paramount, California. To keep the ice from melting, they later enclosed it under a massive dome, which was one of the first indoor rinks in the region.

Business was good, but maintaining that ice was slow and labor-intensive. It took five workers over an hour to scrape and re-freeze the ice.

So Zamboni did what he did best: he built a machine to solve the problem.

By 1949, the first Zamboni Ice Resurfacer was ready. It could shave, sweep, and flood the ice in minutes. Hockey players, skaters, and rink owners were stunned.

But did Frank Zamboni get rich from it? Not really. He patented the design and built a successful company. Rather than franchising the Zamboni name, he focused on building quality machines. He kept things family-run. He kept inventing. (He even designed a hovercraft and artificial turf cleaner.)
