Thumbs Up
A Tiny Gesture with a Big History

The thumbs-up is one of the most recognized ways to say “Nice job!” or “I’m in!” But where did it come from?
Many trace it back to ancient Rome, imagining gladiators judged with a dramatic thumbs-up or down. But that’s more myth than fact. Historians believe a thumbs-up likely meant “go ahead,” not “spare him!”
The gesture really took off in World War II, when American pilots used it to signal “all clear” above roaring engines. After the war, it hit pop culture. The Fonz made it cool, and Hollywood made it iconic.
Then came the internet. The thumbs-up became a digital shorthand for approval, with Facebook’s “Like” button turning it into a global symbol.
Today, it’s simple, effective, and instantly understood with no words needed.
