How Trees Get Their Energy

Trees may seem still, but they’re busy powerhouses fueled by sunlight, water, and nutrients.
Sunlight = Tree Fuel
Through photosynthesis, leaves turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into glucose (tree food) and oxygen (the air we breathe). Chlorophyll—the green pigment—acts like a solar panel.
Water = Life Support
Roots draw water from the soil, which helps with photosynthesis, nutrient transport, and hydration. It travels upward through xylem vessels in a process called transpiration.
Nutrients = Tree Vitamins
Roots absorb essential minerals like nitrogen (for leafy growth), phosphorus (for strong roots), and potassium (for balance). Even tiny amounts of iron and zinc matter.
Teamwork Underground
Trees partner with fungi and bacteria to boost nutrient intake and convert nitrogen into usable forms.
Together, these elements keep trees growing tall and the planet breathing.
